This is a very silly story, and I mean that in the best way possible. Our main protagonist, Toby, is in the 8th or 9th grade, and acts like it- including various stupid chpoices, like stealing stuff from his parents to sell to buy a fancy gaming computer. This brings a second plot into action... but the first is the way a foreign national is subverting the Science Fair in order to bring down the United States, with the aid and assistance of ambitious and unethical parents and kids.
Naturally, everyone believes the rich kids, including the Feds. So it is up to our middle-schoolers to save the day!
Unlike some of Barry's adult novels, this has no inappropriate content in terms of sex or language, so is suitable for most middle-schoolers and up- though as an adult, I found it a very entertaining read.
Characterization was good; ridiculousness abounds; the plot(s) is/are complex and a bit farce-like, and there's a real snarky shout-out to Home Shopping Network.
Recommended if you like silly farces!

Never a dull moment, but I would like to taste smert. Great names - no vowels. Read it if farce is your game.
While this book is geared towards teens and young adults, I enjoyed the heck out of it. Lots of action and it was really a lot of fun trying to figure out how I would pronounce the names of some of the characters. While the kids got into a lot of trouble they were really working hard to save the day and the world! I highly recommend it.
My son loved this book. He was asking if there would be a sequel.
My husband and I adored Big Trouble and we're fans of his newspaper collum for years. When I learned there was a kids book I just about went over the moon. Kiddo is now a Dave Barry fan too! The characters were well developed and what you can see a high end prep school kid behaving like. Some behaved like over indulged kids cause well are.
The imagination and wit drip off the pages. The plot was easily followed without being overly simplified. Another win in a long line of Barry wins
I absolutely LOVE this book! It is one of the few that I own that has been well-loved and well-read! I rank it with the likes of Hunger Games and the Kingdom Keepers series! It is always on my carousel, and it is one of the few books that ALL of my family loves! I love reading these kinds of books it's like a mix of pre-dystopian,adventure, mystery, and humor. I like Star Warsaw well, so it's fun to see some of that in a book that is not Star wars themed. Overall, a great book! I would give it 10 stars if I could!!!!!
My 13 year-old son and I read "Science Fair" together (I read it out loud), and we both were stopped many times by bouts of hysterical laughter! What an enjoyable book to read! The suspense of the story also kept us hanging on every word. And what a surprise ending (didn't see it coming at all).
This book could easily be read and enjoyed by children ages 9-99! The plot and the details of Science Fair are absurd and over the top, but that is why I think we enjoyed it so much. Science Fair is a book that definitely would appeal to kids, with its mix of humor and action.
This book was good, clean fun - not spooky or scary in any way. Haven't laughed like this in a long time! I encourage to feed your sense of humor and adventure by reading "Science Fair"!
Eighth grader Toby Harbinger has problems. One, he has two goons shadowing him, after he sold them allegedly faulty Star Wars merchandise - without his parents' permission. The other is the upcoming science fair - he's stumbled into a possible cheating ring that may be connected to an attempt to take over America.
While Toby and his friends attempt to solve the mystery, Grdankl the Strong, president of the Republic of Krpshtskan, is sending his minions to the US to carry out his plans. Like the goons in "Big Trouble," they aren't rocket scientists and are easily distracted. Fortunately, several of the legit science projects (featuring Rollerblade Barbie, Diet Coke and a levitating frog) manage to help save the day. Also helping are the Home Shopping Network, Judge Judy, an Oscar Meyer Weinermobile, and an invisibility iPhone.
I've no idea if any of the science details are accurate (some I remember from Barry's columns), but I laughed all the way through. My favorite part was when the President goes onto address the nation, tells them everything is under control and thinks, "I hope they're buying this."
Dave is a scream as a non-fiction writer, and along with the hugely talented Ridley Pearson, he masterfully and magically makes the transfer of brilliant comedy amid a nutty plot with the greatest of ease in "Science Fair." Hands down, my favorite character was the proprietor of "The Science Nook" and weird scientist, Sternabite. I lost it when, near the beginning, Sternabite was issued an eviction notice, and then when the powers that be did not back down, he arranged it to shut down the power in the mall for 3 days--no phone, no lights, no displays in the rest of the flashy stores--but full power in The Science Nook. And then--and only then--when the mall manager came back with an apology, Sternabite appeared to not move at all, but the power came back on! His mechanical attack owl, talking vacuum cleaner, invisibility device, and the mechanical attack spider named Charlotte made me wish that someone like that existed near where I live!
